【Title】Care Economy: Towards the Achievement of SDGs

【Outline】

In Japan and other countries, women bear most of household chores and care of child, the elderly and other household members at home for free of charge. For this 'unpaid care work,' in 2016 Japanese women, on average spent 3 hours 28 minutes per day whereas Japanese men spent only 44 minutes. While Japanese men spent longer hours on paid work than women, when the unpaid and paid work combined, Japanese women worked longer hours than men (The 2016 survey on time use and leisure activities).

The Sustainable Development Goal Target 5.4 calls for recognizing and valuing "unpaid care and domestic work through the provision of public services, infrastructure and social protection policies and the promotion of shared responsibilities. This event aims at creating awareness of the 'care economy' derived from reducing unpaid care work through the provision of public services, infrastructure and social protection, and providing a space to discuss the new research agenda as well as the ways to reflect the research findings better on the policy-making, based on the Asian case studies including Japan.
